AVG Firewall blocking MS ActiveSync

I encontered some problems with Grisoft AVG Security products and Microsoft ActiveSync. When the firewall was active it was not possible to use ActiveSync, since the devices would not connect or activesync could not detect them.

I found the following solution, the fist part is only nessasary on Windows Vista.

Start by ensuring that you have the newest AVG version installed, since this eases the solution quite a lot.

Do the following to enable the ActiveSync communication (Not Windows Vista):

  1. Connect your device to the computer
  2. Launch the "Automatic Configuration Wizard" by right click on Firewall component in AVG Control Center and update the existing configuration if you are asked
  3. Save the new configuration
  4. Now create a new System rule this way:
    1. Launch AVG Control Center -> right-click the component Firewall->Configure->System tab
    2. Click on the "Add rule" button
    3. Enter name for this rule (e.g. ActiveSync) and click on "Create rule" button
    4. Find the "ActiveSync" service in the next window and double-click it to move to the "Applied Services" section
    5. Confirm all settings by clicking on the OK button

If you are using Microsoft Windows Vista, you need to do a little more, see the following guide:(Vista)

  1. Connect your mobile device to the computer
  2. Launch the "Automatic Configuration Wizard" (Run AVG  Control center -> right-click the Firewall component -> select "Automatic Configuration Wizard")
  3. Update the existing configuration if you are asked
  4. Save the new configuration
  5. Run AVG  Control Center -> right-click the Firewall component -> select "Configure"
  6. Switch to the "Applications" tab and find the "Various System Services" rule
  7. Edit this rule by using "Edit Application" button and click on the "Create Rule" button
  8. Find the "ActiveSync" service in the next window and double-click it to move to the "Applied Services" section
  9. Confirm these settings by the OK button
  10. Now please find the newly created rule in the "List of rules" for the Various System Services and move the rule up by using the "Move Up" button (please note, that it's necessary to move the newly created rule before the "RPC" rule)
  11. Confirm the settings for "Various System Services" by OK button and switch to the "System" tab
  12. Click on the "Add rule" button
  13. Enter some name for this rule (e.g. ActiveSync) and click on the "Create rule" button
  14. Find the "ActiveSync" service in the next window and double-click it to move to the "Applied Services" section
  15. Confirm all settings by clicking on the OK button
